“Oskar’s America”: Crimson, White & Blue as Idyllic Picture

Once I was a child my finest buddy and I constructed a cardboard craft that we meant to launch us into orbit. We lived inside shouting distance of the Manned Spacecraft Heart in suburban Houston and every of our dad’s, together with my Norwegian-born pappa, Ole, have been NASA engineers. We, like all of our associates and schoolmates, revered the U.S. house program. For propulsion my buddy’s previous man steered that we partially fill clear plastic gallon jugs with water and seal them in order to generate strain inside. Then we might set up these “boosters” onto the again of our rudimentary rocket, twist off the caps, and blast off to the celebrities. Though I used to be away on household trip for launch day, upon return my chum regrettably reported that the operation was not successful.

We have been genuinely crushed. As a result of we genuinely believed.

Enter the Norwegian fantasy drama “Oskar’s America”. The titular character is a ten-year-old boy (Odin Eikre in a charmingly endearing efficiency), the son of Isabel (Marie Blokhus), a younger single mom mired in substance abuse, grandson of grizzled grandpa, Helmer (Bjørn Sundquist) and enamored with the mystique of what he has come to consider America to be. That’s, a land by which everyone is a cowboy, gloriously driving horses upon the huge, open prairie. Not not like the naivete inherent in my Quixotic “co-astronaut’s” and my imaginative and prescient of conquering the huge expanse of the heavens in our selfmade composition board contraption.

Oskar is left to reside along with his grumpy gramps, an anti-social loner who’s engaged on a mysterious mission within the basement, while Isabel is away in America on a job for a few weeks.

    Or so she tells him.

Throughout this time the teenager meets a man-child named Levi (a touching flip by the late Jørgen Langhelle), who resides along with his solely companion in life, a diminutive equine he has christened, natch, “Horsie”. When Oskar learns that his mom has lied to him about her whereabouts, his world is shattered. Decided greater than ever now to start anew within the USA, he and Levi hatch a plan to row throughout the Atlantic Ocean, simply as one among Levi’s ancestors had carried out a long time in the past. When Isabel learns that Oskar has gone lacking from her father’s residence, she units out on a frantic search to seek out her son. Having efficiently evaded each native hostile punks and legislation enforcement, Oskar and Levi are nearly to set sail when Isabel comes upon them on the seashore.

Odin Eikre, Jørgen Langhelle & “Horsie”

Three misplaced souls have discovered one another.

What lies forward for the trio is in no way sure.

    Besides this…

Wherever, and no matter, the journey, it’s destined to be traveled ceaselessly as one.
